Trip to the Carrus factory
21 years ago a brand new three-axle bus rolled out of the Carrus factory in Finland. 40 EBÜ bus drivers aboard the same bus rolled back into the factory at the beginning of October to take a tour and show the workers there our restored Volvo Carrus.
The trip to Finland started in the early hours of the day when everyone gathered at the Tallinn harbour to cross the gulf on the first ferry. Finnish bus drivers association’s delegation was waiting for the Estonians at the Helsinki harbour to start a busy day together.
Our journey took us towards Turku to visit the Carrus Delta bus factory in Lieto.
In Lieto we were greeted by the Carrus factory management board. The bus factory is over 80 years old and after a delicious lunch at the workers cafeteria we got to learn more about it. The history overview was illustrated by modern products which were beside us the entire time and which we got to look at closer later.
For assembly line introduction we were divided into three groups. We were shown every stage of the bus construction starting from the chassis rolling into the factory to the finished and technically checked bus leaving the factory. We went through the entire process in an hour but one bus needs 30 working days for that. About 10 buses are built in Carrus factory in a month.
After learning about the production line we got to look around in the brand new buses that were ready to be handed over to the clients. Time flew by and after the group photo was taken we rode our Carrus to Turku where we visited the Dome church and the fortress.
It was already getting dark when we headed back to Helsinki. We dined at a roadside fast food restaurant and one and half hours before the ferry departure we were back at the Helsinki harbour. It had been a very exciting day.
We are very grateful to the Finnish bus drivers association’s management for helping us organise this fun event.
